Moving - Schedule


Around 8 weeks:
Contact your selected moving company and notify them of the moving day
Start collecting boxes of various sizes if you plan to do the packing your self

Around 6 weeks
Make a list of your belongings; decide what ones you are going to move, what you are going to sell (if you want too) and what you are going to donate to charity. Keep the list for insurance purposes if the worst should happen.
Also make a list of every one you need to tell that your moving (check the “things to take care off” section).

Around 4 weeks
Arrange a garage sale to sell the items in your list, or advertise for sale in newspapers or on EBay.
Get a “change of address” kit from the post office, fill out the cards, wait and mail them on the last week. To make your life easier you may wish to create the cards on the computer to save you writing them out.

Around three weeks
Start the packing, do a small amount each day, this will help relieve the stress and allow you to take you time and pack the best possible way.
Collect important documents, such as school records, wills, deeds, vehicle documents etc).
Arrange to close accounts at your local bank and open a new one at your new location if necessary.

Around two weeks
Start to use up aerosols and flammable materials, corrosives etc as movers cannot transport these.

The last week
Pack the remainder of your belongings.
Pack stuff you are taking with you, set them aside, and make it clear to the movers not to load them, either by telling them and/or labelling.
Pack a box of tools and materials for your new home, such as cleaning products, tools for assembling furniture and electrical equipment/appliances etc.

Moving Day
Carry your important documents and valuables with you (i.e. jewellery).
Make one last check of the entire house, including cupboards, closets, attic etc.
Say goodbye to your old home, make sure you lock all the windows and doors, and set off for your new home.
